During the latter part of 2019 and throughout 2020 Insomnia Design were engaged to provide graphic design services to WA’s $400 million ‘New Museum Project’.
The Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip is a world-class, landmark project reflecting the extraordinary history, creativity and diversity of Western Australia. It houses eight galleries within some 5000m2 of state-of-the-art exhibition space and was opened to the public on 21 November 2020.
Lowana Bibby (senior partner) was engaged to provide the graphic design work for two major galleries – CHANGES, a permanent exhibition that looks at human impact on the environment, and NGALANG KOORT BOODJA WIRN, a permanent exhibition that is the hub for Aboriginal stories in the Museum. Along with additional roles in other aspects of the broader project, Lowana executed the design and illustration of dress panels for objects displayed in the aforementioned galleries as well as key lighting projections and other multimedia imagery. She created artwork for 600+ graphic panels ranging from large scale supergraphics to object label rails inside showcases, as well as liaising extensively with the contractors involved in the production and installation.
Matt Kronberger (senior partner) designed some 200+ interpretive graphic panels and object label rails for the major gallery WILDLIFE, a permanent exhibition that investigates the unique and interconnected biodiversity that has evolved in Western Australia over millions of years.
Matt and Lowana worked closely with exhibition curators and content stakeholders to conceptualise and detail graphic designs that communicate complex information within given guidelines for a broad, general audience.
